Samsung Goes Green with 'Blue Earth' Solar Powered Touch Phone

Samsung Electronics has stepped up its goal for environmental sustainability with the release of its latest mobile phone, the Blue Earth.

The new phone, unveiled just today, is a solar powered full-touch screen phone that can be charged through a solar panel on the back of the phone.

Not only does the phone look like a round, shiny pebble but it also includes a user interface that is designed to draw attention to environmental preservation and is made from recycled plastic from water bottles.

An ‘eco walk’ function included with the phone also lets users count their steps with an in-built pedometer and calculates how much CO2 emissions were saved by walking instead of driving. This value is then converted into how many trees have been saved.

To further promote energy conservation, the phone can also be switched to "Eco Mode" which sets screen brightness, backlight duration and Bluetooth to more energy efficient modes.

The phone and charger, which has is 5 star energy efficient, and has very low standby power, is also free from harmful substances. Also, the phone's packaging is made from recycled paper.

“Samsung’s (News - Alert) ‘The Blue Earth Dream’ demonstrates our small but meaningful commitments for the future and our environment,” said Mr. JK Shin, Executive Vice President and Head of Mobile Communication Division of Samsung Electronics. "We are committed to achieving the highest eco-status with our customers and business partners by providing the best eco-products and promoting eco-activities.”

Earlier this month, Samsung announced  a new line of wireless printers that can work anywhere in the home and small office. Wireless printing has increased in popularity not only because it eliminates the clutter from cables and wires, but also because it allows users on the same network to be more productive and print from anywhere.
