Nortel Offers Energy Savings Credit Program to New Customers

Nortel (News - Alert) has announced it is offering an energy savings credit program to North American enterprise data managers. This program will help new customers reduce operating costs and combat the "Cisco (News - Alert) Energy Tax".

Nortel is currently running a marketing campaign that claims Cisco’s equipment consumes more energy than comparable Nortel devices, hence representing an “energy tax” on its customers. With many companies now focusing on energy efficiency, any company that can actually compute energy savings in a standardized form is likely to have a significant advantage.
Nortel is providing new customers purchasing its data solutions with a credit approximately equal to approximately their first-year's energy savings as calculated by the Nortel Energy Efficiency Calculator (NEEC), which is based on independent public data.
The calculator analyzes deployment scenarios based on different configurations, equipment, cooling costs, regional power costs and other energy factors specific to the customer's network over one full year. Entering the information required by the online tool generates a report that allows customers to calculate how much energy their company could be saving by switching from a Cisco-based data network configuration to Nortel equipment. The approximate energy savings for the first year is then discounted by Nortel from the cost of a new data network.
"Customers participating in this promotion may double the energy saving benefits of Nortel data solutions - first in the upfront credit, then through reduced energy consumption throughout the first year," said Net Payne, vice president, North America marketing, Nortel. "We are confident that once data managers see firsthand the savings available to them by integrating Nortel data equipment into their existing networks, they will want to expand their use of our products."
According to Nortel, independent third-party tests were conducted by the Tolly Group. Nortel had commissioned the Tolly Group to carry out tests in May 2008 on a converged network infrastructure for network users that utilized Nortel switchers, routers and IP phones. Tolly Group engineers compared the energy consumption of the Nortel products, in terms of the power to operate the devices, as well as the power consumed in relation to heat dissipation.
Results were compared with products from Cisco Systems (News - Alert) and indicate that Nortel data networks consume up to 40 percent less power. Tolly Group's latest test shows that operating a Cisco core switch can cost up to 64 percent more in energy costs during a five year period than a comparable Nortel solution.
The Energy Savings Credit campaign runs through December 12, 2008 and is available via Nortel direct sales or its channel sales teams. Any company that is new to Nortel data solutions, with a minimum of 1,000 employees and network sites in North America is eligible to participate in the energy savings credit program.
This eligibility criterion also applies to companies with competitor's equipment and existing Nortel voice customers. Nortel data customers who have not made Nortel data purchases from January of 2005 until December of 2007 are also eligible for the promotion. Customers need to have a Nortel Data purchase above a specific amount to qualify.
